Our railings are made from Northern White Cedar that we get from Michigan. White Cedar is naturally rot resistant, can be put in the ground, and used inside and outside. Posts (vertical) are approx. 5" diameter, Rails (horizontal) and Pickets (vertical) are approx. 3" diameter. See pictures of finished railings in our albums.
COST: We estimate cost by the length you give us - $18 a linear foot or $1.50 an inch.
PROCESS: We can give you a rough estimate if you give us approximate measurements. When you approve the estimate, we'd like half as downpayment. Most orders are done within 2-4 weeks. We'd like the balance on completion, when you pick them up. We really don't have time to deliver, so you may need to rent or borrow a truck.
MEASURING: If you are putting rail on an open deck, we need the exact lengths from edge to edge. If rails are going between posts on a covered porch, we need the exact length between posts. For stairways, we need approximate lengths and we will supply plenty of extra material. Sending floor plans is great. If you want to fax something, please call us first so we turn on the fax machine.
WHAT WE GIVE YOU: Straight rails are made to your length specifications usually in 8' sections, using mortise and tenon joinery. For stair rails, we give you all the pieces, but they must be put together onsite, since each stairway is different. Only for stairways: we will loan our tenoning tool for a deposit of $100. It is used with a heavy-duty 1/2" drill you provide.
INSTALLATION: Either you can install yourself, or we can give you the name of people who have done excellent work. We recommend an installer, or someone familiar with stair construction to install stair rail.
FINISHING: All logs have been sanded to 80 grit. They can be left to weather to a silver gray, or you can finish with stain to match your home.
